the theories: SFBT, Reality therapy & rebt
I have chosen an integrated approach combining Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, Reality Therapy, and REBT. I have chosen these three theories because I believe elements from each of these theories combine to help students best attend to their academic, career, and personal/social needs.
I chose SFBT because it is strengths-based, quick, and provides an easy way to move client thinking from being problem-centered to solution-centered. I chose Reality Therapy because it centers on asking the client to define their goals and wants as they see them and leads easily to goal-setting. Finally, I chose REBT because I have found that students many times hold many irrational beliefs to be irrefutable truths. I have found that giving students the space to refute and question these irrational beliefs increases their readiness to change.
